Post transplant update

Right on schedule, Deann engrafted about 10 days after her last transplant. She was discharged from the hospital yesterday & is now back at our apartment in Salt Lake City. She did great getting through the transplant and related chemo-steroid treatments. That’s not to say she feels good...the usual effects are back in full force, but she’s determined as ever to get through it all. Not sure how long we’ll be here, probably another two weeks minimum, but after the last go round, we want to be sure she doesn’t leave here too soon. She thanks everyone for all the support & good thoughts...it means so much to her.

Yes, Another Birthday!

Deann had the second of her tandem transplants today, so it was another birthday celebration. She is doing fine....going a little stir crazy being confined to her hospital room, but that means she still feels good. Her blood counts haven’t dropped yet, so she is able to dine on the outstanding hospital cuisine, although she doesn’t seem to have a full appreciation for the house specialty, crusty Jell-O.
It’s old home week for Deann. Three plus years ago she was in the room next door having her first transplant. There are still a few of the same docs and nurses here and they have all come by to visit her. She’s even made some new friends. One is her attending doctor, Dr. Sauna. He’s a Middle Eastern fellow, maybe Indian, with a pretty heavy accent. Deann asked him how to pronounce his name and he said just like it sounds in English. She explained she was pretty bad remembering names but with that tip, she was sure to remember his. Sure enough as he made his rounds the next day and was leaving Deann said, “See you later Dr. Spa”. No wonder they remember her so well around here!

Round 2

After a few setbacks, the clinic queen is into round 2 of her transplant treatment. Last week, docs reviewed the results of the first transplant & were encouraged by the results. It had knocked the hell out of those bad cancer cells, but as we now know, she really needs a second transplant to improve the period of remission. Problem with the first transplant was she had to go on oxygen to assist her breathing and has been on it ever since. There was concern that a second round of treatment would further compromise her breathing. As Dr. Tricott put it, “We don’t want to kill you in the process of curing your cancer” (Hard to argue with that!) So, after consultation with pulmonary specialists, much praying, introspection, angst, etc., we’ve decided to move forward. Deann is so strong in her determination to get through the treatment with the best possible results, that it left little doubt this course of action is the way to go. She will need to be hospitalized for this one and will be closely monitored. In fact, she went into the hospital today and was treated to a big shot of chemo to get things going! She’ll get another on Monday, followed by the transplant on Tuesday. After that, we’ll wait for engraftment, usually in another 10-12 days. The clinic queen needs your positive thoughts and prayers again to help her get through this one....and she knows she can count on them!

Belated Update

We have been remiss in keeping this little blog up to date since Deann has been back in Carson City. Sorry bout that ...we forget that some of you are counting on us for an update now & then, so here it is!

The Huntsman Clinic folks told us there is no real normal pattern patients can count on to predict how they will respond to their treatment. Deann seemed to sail through the toughest times and then got feeling worse when we thought she should have begun to feel better. After getting back to Carson City she spent a week in Carson Tahoe Hospital battling fever & diarrhea. She was in an isolation room for potentially contagious “bugs” but they were ruled out. The docs got her fever down a bit and let her go home. She’s been home for two weeks now & is feeling better. Her fever set back the treatment she was supposed to start after returning to Carson City but she’ll be able to start that tomorrow. The plan is for her to return to Salt Lake on January 11th for transplant number two.

We are so thankful for all the support shown to us since we’ve been back. From wonderful meals, to help with chores, to gifts, visits, cards and calls...I know it’s what keeps a smile on the Clinic Queen’s face!

Home at last!

Deann is finally back at home. She was able to go home on Saturday and is enjoying the comforts of her home, kitty cat, and husband.

Going home soon!

Momma Deann is doing much better. I spoke with her today and she seemed to being feeling more like her old self. There is the possibility of allowing her to go home this weekend, however we don't want to rush things and make sure she is healthy enough to leave.

Unfortunately I don't have much more info at this time, but will get my facts in order and post them as soon as I know what is the 411.

Thank you to all those who Fasted today, Deann and fam appreciate all your efforts.  

Deann is still in the hospital, boo.  But the staff is keeping her fever down, making her feel much better.  They are testing various things that may be causing her fever, but until they know the reason she is trying to rest, stay hydrated and build up strength.
